A General System of Horsemanship (Allen's Classic Series)
Published in Hardcover by J.A. Allen & Co Ltd (February, 2000)
Average review score:

The way to good riding is timelessOnce you get over the different style of font and familiarize yourself with the vocabulary this book privides for some exciting reading. This man must have been a genius. He provides detail description of how to loosen up your young horse in the shoulders and further work and excercises in a precise way which still pertains to the basics how we ride today. Its sometimes good to go back to the original scourses.
Fortunate Cavendish put it in writingTogether with books by Guérinière, Müseler, and Podhasky (see these) this too is a very important book concerning classical dressage. The text gives the impression of being written with considerable thought...this contrasts somewhat with some modern dressage texts. This text together with Guérnière's is highly recomendable.

Giving a Voice to the Ancestors

Giving a Voice to the AncestorsI just finished reading "Giving a Voice to the Ancestors" and I can't tell you how fascinating this book was to me. I learned a lot of history, the Civil War, history as it happened in the South as well as the Cherokee Indian history. The vivid portrayal of the complete family was just wonderful. It was so touching to read a book with tales about actual people.
I'm sure reading this book brought back memories to others as it did to me. My father was a chef also. He smoked cigars and we played checkers together, so each time I read a piece that reminded me of something in my childhood it gave me little chills. I smiled, I shed a few tears and experienced all of the emotions that make you know you are reading a good book.

Giving a Voice to the AncestorsWhen words flow fluently creating pictures of places, and people and activity it is difficult to put "Giving a Voice to the Ancestors" aside. Quickly one becomes immersed into lives of anguish created by man's inhumanity to man.
Through the sadness is a reocurring theme:hard work, faith in God, and education does bring one security and dignity.
Thus Emily Allen Garland in a well-researched book, while giving us a glimpse into the life of slavery and bias, leaves the reader with a message of hope.

The Great Movie Comedians: From Charlie Chaplin to Woody Allen
Published in Hardcover by Random House Value Pub (May, 1978)
Average review score:

A MilestoneThis book holds up today. I've owned it for 20 years now, and still refer to it. Anyone interested in film comedy's history must own this book.
The perfect book on movie comedians and movie comedy:No one understands and appreciates movie comedy better than Leonard Maltin, and here he has written a book on the subject that is simply perfect. His enthusiasm and love of these comedians and their comedies is infectious, and he gives us a giddy yearning to watch the movies he cites. If one is an aspiring comedian, too, this is an inspirational book, filling one with the wonderful possibilities of making an audience laugh. It is difficult to fully describe the unpretentious, simple manner in which Mr. Maltin nails down the very essence of comedy in these pages. How often those who write about comedy smother their subject with detailed theories on its socialogical and psychological implications. Mr. Maltin understands better than anyone the subtle art of analyzing comedy without killing it, making his book an absolute joy.

The Great Pyramid: A Miracle in Stone
Published in Paperback by Garber Communications (Anthroposophic Press) (January, 2000)
Average review score:

What an excellent introduction to study of the Great PyramidThis is a wonderful book! Seiss does a first-rate job of concisely introducing the reader to the fundamentals of the Judeo-Christian spiritual content of the Great Pyramid. He does this in a way that is very engaging, and it makes the book hard to put down. It is also easy to read, despite Seiss' use of Victorian English writing, which is another plus. All in all, this is a book that I would highly recommend for anyone interested in studying the spirtual and scientific truths embodied in the Great Pyramid. It is concise, practical, and informative. In other words, it is excellent.
Very thought provoking. Amazing bibical parallelIt is ammazing how Seiss reads the physical structure in light of biblical history. The comparison of the dimentions of the Great Pyramid to Scripture and history of Gods' people both Jew and gentile is very thought provoking. I have found that recent findings do not discredit any of Seiss' observations. This just helps to enforce the divine being active in the building of this Great Pyramid as Seiss explains. The nonbeliver will have difficulty not to investigate further. There is very strong EVIDENCE of the divine intervention in the building of the monument. Divine science is displayed or should I say Science before science was discovered is displayed. For those who need proof of a God this book is a strong evidence that can not be overlooked. A must reading for those who wish to see where the divine is active in the physical aspect of man's workings. Another foot print of the almighty creator left on his creation for man to see and ponder on. Seiss is a man who has been blessed with great insight to the workings of God. His book on the Apocalypse also displays this.

Greek to Me
Published in Paperback by Xulon Press (July, 2002)
Average review score:

The easy way to learn GreekThis is the book I used to learn beginning Greek grammar. This is an excellent program. Story makes learning Greek easy! He uses Memory Visualization i.e. goofy pictures to help you learn vocab and paradigms. It really worked well for the class I was in, and the silly pictures seemed to make Greek a little less daunting for the novice. Another nice thing about it is that you work through all of the verb paradigms and get down to words occuring 25 times. Now, I am teaching and tutoring Greek students using this book, and I'm finding it just as easy to teach from as it was to learn from. Truly an inventive and masterful system.
Great Ceasar's Greek! This is it. The best Biblical Greek text out there. (Trust me, I've read them all). Story uses word pictures to aid in memorization and recall. Along with the flash cards, this is the best tool for learning New Testament Greek.

Guide to Choosing, Serving & Enjoying Wine
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill Trade (26 May, 2000)
Average review score:

Excellent Book!!!!Allen Balik makes his passion for wine very clear in this wonderful book...a must for both beginners and those in the know...very approachable
Guide to Choosing, Serving & Enjoying WineThis is an interestingly and refreshingly written guide to the whole world of wine for people who may not want to become total wine experts, but who do truly enjoy wine. This book can only enhance their enjoyment. The authors, Allen Balik in particular, obviously are wine experts, so confident of the depth and breadth of their knowledge that they aren't afraid to write with an engaging, accesible style, and without condescending to their readers or patronizing them. They cover a wide variety of subjects -- wine growing, wine selection, wine tasting, ordering wine in a restaurant, buying wine for your dinner table, and many, many more, all with a light, witty touch. The profuse graphics, both art work and photographs, are beautiful. But more than that, they combine synergistically with the written words to make the learning experience easy and aesthtically pleasing. This book is a real keeper!

Guided Comprehension: A Teaching Model for Grades 3-8
Published in Paperback by International Reading Association (November, 2001)
Average review score:

Excellent ResourceGuided Reading/comprehension is a fantastic method of teaching reading. I wish I had found it 39 years ago. This book has a multitude of strategies that can be used at any grade level. Not being entirely comfortable with the method, I have been reading various books to help my students. This book has exactly for what I was looking. It has examples of strategies, templates you can use, explanations for different strategies, tips on how to help your students. The companion book is excellent as well. If you can only get one book, start with this one. This adds to Fountas and Pinnell as well as Mosaic of Thought.
One of my Best Teacher ResourcesI have taught over 22 years - am always buying new materials - but this has become one of my favorites ! Puts all the reading comprehension strategies together and teaches you the latest methods to improve comprehension. Their other book, Guided Comprehension in Action: Lessons for Grades 3-8, is a great companion book. I have taught workshops using strategies from these books and the other teachers and students love the ideas ! I finally know exactly how to have kids improve comprehension and is great for whole class and small groups. Good for learning styles too ! Heartily endorse !

Handbook of Psychotherapy and Behavior Change
Published in Hardcover by John Wiley & Sons (December, 1993)
Average review score:

THE reference for psychotherapy researchAt first read, I was overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information in this book. However, as I have used it more, I have come to appreciate the clarity of the writing, the quality of the research, and the experience of the writers. Every clinician should read this book. It has inspired me to view research as a necessary component of good practice.
A Classic in the FieldThis book is a classic and definitive reference book for every clinical psychologist and psychotherapists in other professions. It would also be informative to the educated non-practitioner who wants to learn more about the field of psychotherapy.

Handgun Lingo
Published in Spiral-bound by Tadeo Books (18 August, 1999)
Average review score:

This book helps me to understand handgun jargon. As a woman and a beginner shooter, I felt uncomfortable when I heard other people using firearm terms that were foreign to me.
Thanks to Handgun Lingo, I can better relate to what other shooters are saying and I no longer feel uncomfortable in joining in on firearms conversations.
At one time, I used a couple of terms and acronyms with a group of experienced shooters that they didn't even understand.
I would highly recommend Handgun Lingo for all beginners and also more experienced shooters.
By the way (BTW), all the shooters in this group are buying a copy of Handgun Lingo.
"...couldn't put the book down..."I used to talk to my wife a lot about what I did while I was on a big city police department and she never understood a word I was saying. When I showed her Handgun Lingo, she smiled and told me to get myself another book."

Hang for Treason
Published in Hardcover by Doubleday (February, 1976)
Average review score:

A Great book for any American boy coming of ageThis book takes place during the outset of the American Revolution. The main character is a young boy in his mid to late teens who is caught up in the spirit of the Revoultion and wants to join the rebels but his father, who is a simple farmer just getting by, does not want his son involved. Of course the son disobeys his father and joins Ethan Allen's group of rebels in time to be in on the capture of Fort Ticondiroga by the rebels. Benedict Arnold appears for a while and the author uses this to show how he was a hero before he turned traitor. The young boy aged by the reality of the conflict starts to see his father's point of view. This book is a remarkable and accurate portrait of an average life in America at the outbreak of one of the most important wars in all human history. The author educates the reader on the history while entertaining. The values and painful lessons learned by the main character are so well presented that it is impossible for any young boy not to have his own character shaped by the book, and for the better. An excellent book entertains educates and serves as a guide for any boy coming of age in America. This book will make you patriotic even if you were not before. I read this book in the library when I was about 12-14 and I remember it vividly, which is a credit to how good a book this is. Now in my early thirties, after reading many other books, this one stands out in my mind as sharply as Huck Finn. Get this if you can find it. I was saddened to see that it was out of print.
An Awesome Read for a young American BoyThis book is wonderful and sadly out of print. It takes place in the midst of the early days of th Revolutionary War. It is about a farmer's son who is swept up in the cause of the rebels and his father's desire to keep him out of the conflict. Of course the son joins the Freedom fighters and he joins the group of rebels under the leadership of Ethan Allen. Benedict Arnold also makes an appearance before he becomes a traitor. The climax of the novel revolves around the capture of Fort Ticondiroga by the rebels. If you find this book, buy it. It is an excellent book for an early teen boy who is coming of age and learning what it means to be a man. The main character experiences war first hand and he starts to see his father's reasoning and the very real and very painful part of war that makes it not so glorious, but ultimately necessary at times. This novel is full of little details about life of the common folk at the outbreak of the War for Independence. It is as educational in terms of history as it is entertaining. And for any young American boy coming of age the book is as formative of good character and virtue as any novel can be. I read when I was around 12-14 sometime around then and I loved it. An excellent book in every aspect, very engrossing and hard to put down. I'm now in my early thirties and I still remember the story of this book although I cannot remember the names. The fact that I remember so much this book is a credit to the author. I read a lot of books, this one made a very deep impression. Too bad its out of print.
